Council to stay in association
A move to have the Waimairi County Council withdraw from the New Zealand Counties Association was defeated at a meeting of the council’s finance and by-laws committee on Monday evening. The chairman of the council (Mr D. B. Rich) said the association was “futile” in outlook and that there was nothing to be gained from membership. If the county withdrew, even temporarily, it might “shake up” ' the association. Cr P. J. Fisher, in support of the recommenda-
tion that the county withdraw, said that the county could become designated a city and qualify for membership of the Municipal Association. The committee’s chairman (Cr J. B. Russ) said he was loath to see the county bum its bridges and have no route to the Government. Cr E. L. Bonisch said there was more to be gained by staying in the association than by withdrawing. The recommendation to withdraw was lost on the vote of the committee’s chairman.
