General John Burgoyne, who sat for this portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds, has been blamed in popular history as the British general whose surrender to the Americans at Saratoga lost the war in North America. But Major-General Lunt says in “John Burgoyne of Saratoga” that this belief has been too easily accepted. He considers that Burgoyne was a man of many talents who has, on the whole, been harshly treated by history. In his book he strikes a balance between Burgoyne’s detractors and his apologists.
