Air pollution
Sir, — Following my comment of July 14 on the relevance of comparing currency decimalisation with the campaign against domestic smoke, the President of the United States early this year signed the bill which makes conversion to the metric system part of United States policy — on a voluntary basis. By comparison St Louis, Missouri, back in 1940, initiated the first effective American control of solid-fuel quality. This was followed by Pittsburgh in 1948. This proves the point; had our Government given the same consideration to air pollution, as it latterly did to currency decimalisation, Christchurch would have been permitted to take some action in the 1930 s to
reduce what was a wellknown problem of smoke pollution then. — Yours, etc., PATRICK NEARY. August 6, 1976.
