Chch orchestra wins contest
The Cashmere High School’s chamber orchestra has won the largegroup section of the Bank of New South Wales school music contest, held at Wellington yesterday.
The Arion Trio, which includes two pupils from Cashmere High School, was second to Wellington’s Telemann Trio in the small-group section. Mrs C. Moffatt, the orchestra’s musical director, said that it had played Corelli’s Concerto Grosso No. 8, while the Arion Trio had played excerpts from a Schubert trio.
“I am delighted — the over-all standard was very high,” Mrs Moffatt said. The school’s chamber orchestra had been assembled only in mid-March.
The orchestra consisted of Rutchen Evans, Rachel Thompson, Sally Nish-
worth, John Moffatt, Jillian Flamank, Margaret Baker, Andriea Cocks. Cathreen Trought, Richard Walsh, Gay Hadcroft, Timothy Hogan, Alice Vandeberg, and Angela Campbell.
The trio consisted of Kathleen De Goldie. Rutchen Evans, and Angela Campbell. The judge of the national final (Dr Douglas Mews) described the orchestra’s performance as having character and the musicians as showing poise.
The Lucca Strings, of Wellington, were second in the large-group section of the contest, with the Nelson School of Music string ensemble, third.
The Cashmere High School’s orchestra will give a performance at the Christchurch Teachers’ College (primary division) this evening, at 8 p.m.
