SMITHFIELD MARKET
The wholesale trade in most meats, in England and Wales, was again steady last week, reports the London office of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board. Prices for home-killed lamb and beef were similar to the previous week, but there was a slight improvement in pork and poultry prices. The New Zealand lamb trade was also steady, although at present wholesalers are moving only a light quantity of stock in anticipation of further price improvements in the coming months. The outlook for a good trade in the remaining months of this year continues promising. Prices for New Zealand lamb were:

Short fores ■ 29.0-30.0 +0.50 MANUFACTURING BEEF Prices for New Zealand beef in the United States improved throughout the week, reports the board’s New York office. Some reduction in the domestic cattle kill helped bring more interest from buyers at the beginning of the week and imported beef prices rose in small, but steady, steps. New Zealand manufacturing grade cow beef sold at 66 U.S. cents per lb, c.i.f., on Thursday, compared with 62 to 63 U.S. cents a week ago. Supplies of cows have eased and this has contributed to an improvement in processing beef prices, including those for imported beef. MUTTON The mutton season in Japan is virtually over, and no reports from Tokyo will be issued until next autumn.
