PA Auckland An application is likely to be made for a deportation order against the American basketball player-coach, J. A. Poitier. after his failure to leave New Zealand oi; Saturday.

The head of the Immigration Department in Auckland, Mr A. W. Smith, said that further action would be taken against Mr Poitier but he did not know what it would be until he had received instructions from Wellington. However, the next step in such cases, Mr Smith said, was to apply to a court for a deportation order. Mr Smith said that airline tickets for Mr Poitier and his wife had been supplied by the Y.M.C.A. Tickets for his children had been supplied by the Government, after a statement by the Minister of Immigration (Mr Gill) last week.

The tickets had been handed to Mr Poitier’s solicitor last week, and Mr Poitier had been due to leave on Saturday. Mr Smith said; but in a television interview last e <ing. Mr Poitier said he had refused to accept the tickets and was determined to stay to clear his name. If a deportation order is granted, Mr Poitier would be escorted aboard an aircraft.
