Trust for open spaces

PA Auckland The Government will establish a national trust for open spaces. The Minister for the Environment (Mr V. S. Young) said in Auckland during the week-end that the trust would set aside open space without resorting to compulsory land purchase. “This will enable landowners to make voluntary contributions of land or rights over land to a national trust,” he said.

Another important object would be the co-ordination of Government departments

and local bodies to create a national open space plan.’ The trust would advise the Minister of Lands on the relative importance of different types of open space. Membership of the trust wo '' be open to the public, and subscriptions would help the Government to buy land and negotiate covenants. The Minister added that the Government would try to give the public a greater say in environmental decisions.

A review of planning legislation would include study of the rights of the public to object to plans and appeal against decisions.
