Colts beaten by Counties

PA Auckland After dominating the game throughout, Counties scored three tries to one for a comfortable, but not particularly impressive, win against the New Zealand Colts team on Saturday. Counties could have been expected to easily beat a team which had lost to Wanganui and drawn with Thames Valley.

It was, generally, a scrappy game which did not spark until the second half, when both teams tried to spin the slippery ball.

A feature of the game was the poor goal-kicking, no doubt affected by the muddy conditions. The Colts fullback, Clive Currie, landed one kick from five attempts,

the Counties full-back, Buff Milner, missed all three of his attempts and the centre, Bob Lendrum, managed one in four. Scorers: Counties 15 (tries by Rawiri, Yates, Mcßobbie. A penalty by Lendrum). N.Z. Colts: (McGill a try, Currie a penalty). And at Hamilton, after establishing a winning break in the middle stages of the game, Waikato held on to beat Hawke’s Bay 30-22 in a representative match. The Hawke’s Bay forwards won a big share of possession from lineouts and scrums and the backs were sent on their way by their outstanding half-back, Jock McCarroll. However, Waikato made the most of errors by Hawke’s Bay, to win.
