Another Country win
It has been a great season for country rugby in Canterbury. With wins against Town at both senior and under-19 levels already accomplished, Country yesterday made it three in a row by winning the annual colts’ match at Lancaster Park oval, 10-7. A brilliant impromptu effort by Steve Thomas in the fourth minute of the second half tipped the game Country’s way. He charged down a blindside kick by his opposing first five-eighths, John Neilson, seized the ball, and out-
i paced the cover defence to , score. Trailing by 3-10, Town made most of the play in the last quarter. The fori wards won plenty of ball, and the captain, Vince O’Loughlin, gave the order to open up play in the backs. Ten minutes from the end a sparkling move by Town was capped by a try from the left wing, lan Mather. But other thrusts were contained by a resolute Country defence; in the last minute two moves were halted at the foot of the corner stick. Ross Loffhagen led his Country pack well, and An-
drew Munro was frequently prominent for shrewd play at second five-eighths. John Te Amo and Mark Levy played purposefully up front for Town, and Neilson and O’Loughlin gave impetus to back movements.
For Country: Try by Thomas; two penalty goals by Darryl Campbell. For Town: Try by Mather; penalty goal by Brett Codlin.
Tennis.—Evonne Cawley was upset by fellow Australian Kerry Reid 6-4 in the women’s singles, but the Pittsburgh Triangles won all four other events to defeat the Boston Lobsters 28-13 in a World Team Tennis match at Pittsburgh.
