Cricket coaching certificates
A total of 1767 New Zealanders now hold youth cricket coaching certificates after a scheme introduced 10 years ago. And the number of advanced coaches —at district, club and senior women’s levels—now stands at 153. with 20 of 24 candidates passing in the last year. Coaching, and the continuation of various schemes, was discussed fully by the New Zealand Cricket’s Council’s board of control in private during the week-end. One outcome was that Martin Horton the national coach for 10 years, financed by Rothmans, will continue in that position, with a three-year contract, financed by the council. Also, association and regional coaching schemes will continue as before.
Wellington’s Basin Reserve is the only major cricket ground in New Zealand where the pitch is not the subject of criticism—maybe because the Indian touring team of last season had not reported on it, as one board member suggested. Mr G. T. Dowling presented a report furnished from captains’ views of the various first-class pitches. Lancaster Park. Queen’s Park
(Invercargill), Palmerston North, Carisbrook (Dunedin), Eden Park (Auckland!. Seddon Park (Hamilton), and Napier pitches were all criticised to various degrees and for various reasons.
In many cases, low or uneven bounce were mentioned. New Zealand does not propose to seek a place in the Australian Gillette Cup competition in the immediate future, the chairman (Mr W’. A. Hadlee) announced.
He also reported an Australian proposal to limit the number of on-side fieldsmen in matches in Australia was not supported by the International Cricket Conference meeting in England recently. However, one move which did gain support was the ban on “advertising matter on articles of clothing.” including gloves, pads, and boots. It also stipulates that all clothing, apart from sweaters, gloves, and caps should be plain white.
The whole issue is being kept under review. Mr L. K. Denton, of Taranaki, has been appointed manager of the New Zealand secondary schoolboys’ team to tour Australia.
