Zebak tried hard in the Paparua Handicap

Zebak missed victory by only a head in the Paparua Handicap, second leg of the Canterbury Jockey Club's T A.B. double on Saturday. If victory had gone his way, it would have been tinged with some sadness. This run came only four days after the death of his Christchurch breeder and partowner, Mr Tom Davis, who was at Riccarton a week earlier when the chestnut ran unplaced in the Christchurch Hunt’s Brabazon Handicap. Ridden by his Riccarton

trainer, Ron McCann, Zebak came from last with a big run to beat all but the Nelson-owned and trained Battle Joy in the Paparua Handicap, He was the 4-3 favourite, and his conqueror was 3-4 in the betting. Battle Jov is raced by her breeder. Mr R. H. Wadsworth, and trained by J. N. J. Healey, w'ho brought the Battle Waggon mare to a very useful level of performance last season to win in a lower grade at Trentham. More recently Battle Joy

had been under a treatment for a virus, but she came back as good as ever on Saturday to win gamely, if narrowly. North Island stables supplied the two best-backed runners in Marenostro and Surrev Park, but thev were expensive failures. Marenostro was a fading sixth and Surrey Park dropped away fast from a contending position up the straight to finish eighth.

The battle for third was left to two Wingatui runners Final Flutter edging out Slade bv a head
