River damage by trail bikes

Motor-cyclists who use land on the north bank of the Waimakariri River, just below the highway bridge, will be warned by the North Canterbury Catchment Board that they should not ride on or across the stop-banks. Mr M. J. O. Dixon told a meeting of the board yesterday that a petition had come in from Kainga and Stewart’s Gully residents, complaining about the noise from motorcycles being ridden on the other side of the river. “There are sizeable numbers, mostly ridden by young people, at the week-ends,” said Mr Dixon. "They are developing circuits, unfortunately involving the stopbanks.

“These young enthusiasts are not setting out to annoy people, but damage, not extensive, is developing on the banks. We don't want to close them out, as this land is probably the best site for such a use along the Waimakariri and it would be hard to find an alternative.” When the board was shown a draft explanatory and warning notice of 74 words, Mr H. E. Connor, the board’s philologist, made a plea for simplicity.

“Why not ‘This is an asset to protect you. Please keep off the bank’,” he asked.
