Parliament’s Diary
The W’aitangi Day Bill and the Gaming Duties Amendment Bill were each read a first time yesterday. The annual reports of the State Services Commission and the Medical Research Council were tabled, and the Speaker (Sir Roy Jack) tabled the report of the Chief Ombudsman (Sir Guy Powles) on the Security Intelligence Service. Notice of one impending motion was given. Ministers answered 12 oral and one urgent question, and at 11.45 a.m. the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) moved for urgency
on formal business and the Budget debate. This was carried 47-28.
Dr A. M. Finlay (Labour, Henderson) alleged that’ a breach of privilege had been com-
mitted by the chairman of the road safety committee (Mr M. J. Minogue, National, Hamilton West) in imparting information to a newspaper without committee approval. After argument, a decision on this was held over until Tuesday, to enable the member to be present. Parliament continued to discuss the introduction of the Nuclear Free Zone (New Zealand) Bill, a private measure sponsored by Mr R. W. Prebble (Labour, Auckland Central). It was rejected 37-21 and the House rose at 3.20 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday.
