Brighton in key fixture
' By BARNEY ZWARTZ | Both Christchurch Roth- 1 mans League soccer teams ' visit Auckland this week-end to face difficult opponents, < and one game is of vital importance to the league. Trans Tours United meets North Shore United tomorrow in a match that means little, whereas New Brighton meets Mount Wellington today in a game that could have a profound effect on the league table. Brighton, after its loss to Blockhouse Bay last week, seems to have little chance of taking any major prize money — it is eight points behind with two games in hand. But Mount Wellington, in the middle of its belated run, is the only team in a position to challenge Caversham and Wellington Diamond United, who between them are running away with the league. Brighton will do exceedingly well to return with even one point. The Mount has won its last four games in succession, beat Caversham last week at Dunedin and appears to be in irresistible form.
Aftyr their loss to the Bay and their tough programme for the rest of the season — including the Mount and W.D.U. at home and its local derby with United — the seasiders are likely to concentrate on their Lion Chatham Cup run, as is United.
Normally United would be predicted to beat North Shore, but its performances recently have been the worst in the club’s history, while Shore last week beat Stop Out, 6-0, in the league’s biggest win this season. United is normally much the better side. Now that its chances of retaining the league seem to have evaporated it can relax and perform to its potential in anticipation of its difficult cup fixture against the Bay next week.
