It's no joke

PA Auckland The head of the Auckland Race Relations Office (Dr Peter Sharpies) confirmed last night that the Irish Society in Auckland had lodged a complaint with him against the “Irish” jokes in a recent edition of the “Listener.” The complaint, under the Race Relations Act, 1975 could make the offender liable to prosecution for inciting racial disharmony. Because of the criminal nature of the alleged offence, said Dr Sharpies,

his office had referred the complaint to the police for their opinion. Dr Sharpies said his office has had a spate of complaints about jokes and cartoons. The “Irish” jokes complained of appeared in the July 31-August 6 edition of the “Listener.” There were 19 jokes grouped under the heading “The Great Irish Shillelagh Machine.” They were the result of a competition run by the magazine.
