Average air pollution readings in central Christchurch, taken by the Health Department at the Reserve Bank and in Manchester Street for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m., yesterday, were: Smoke: 43, medium. Sulphur dioxide: 52, low. Nitrogen oxides: 134, medium. The figures for the inner
suburban area for the same period were: Smoke: 33, low. Sulphur dioxide: 22, low. Nitrogen oxides: 60. low. Readings are in micrograms per cubic metre. Levels are: Sulphur dioxide: less than 60, low; more than 200, high. Smoke: less than 40, low; more than 120, high. Nitrogen oxides: less than 100, low; more than 250, high.
