Girl cyclist killed; boy hurt
A girl was killed and a boy was seriously injured when they were knocked from their bicycles within minutes of each other yesterday morning. The girl was Rosalie Ayers, aged 13. of 27 Halswell Junction Road. She was struck from behind by a car in Sparks Road, near the intersection with Sutherlands Road at 7.55 a.m. She was taken to Christchurch Hospital, where she later died. The driver of the car was taken to hospital suffering from shock and lacerations but was treated and discharged.
Three minutes after this accident, Maxwell Alan Wilde, aged 17, of 21 Halswell Junction Road, was knocked from his bicycle by a car in Halswell Junction Road. He suffered severe head injuries and was taken to Christchurch Hospital bv St John ambulance and admitted to the intensive care ward. Last night he was in a poor condition on the seriously ill list. The second accident happened 200 m from the first.
