Field of 15 in Grand National
Fifteen ’chasers, 10 of them from North Island stables were paidup for in the Grand National Steeplechase when acceptances for the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting closed yesterday.
Top-weight, with 66kg, in Saturday’s $15,500 feature race is the Te Kuiti-trained Idunno, decisive winner of last month’s Wellington Steeplechase. Burglar Bill, which was unsuccessful in his bid for Grand National honours two years ago, is closest to idunno in the weights. He has 64kg, 1.5 more than Sharzan, winner of the Riddiford Steeples at Trentham last month and the runnerup to Thun in last Saturday’s Homeby Steeples. Sir Stanley, last season’s Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase winner, comes in at level weights with Sharzan and these two will be conceding I.skg to Thun and Blason, which has been rated top among the southern ’chasers in the field. North Island trainers will saddle 11 of the 24 acceptors — six are on the list of reserves — in the feature flat race on the programme, the Winter Cup. Pride of place in this $12,250 event for metric milers has gone to Show Gate. This brilliant Mosgiel-trained mare will begin a fresh campaign under the steadier of 63kg. Shifnal Chief, one of the north’s top metric milers, is closest t'o .Showgate in the handicap — he has 62.5 — and other notable northerners a bit further down in the weights are Princess Eulogy, last Saturday’s Brabazon Handicap winner, and the Matamata-trained Kauere Lad, which will be going for his second consecutive victory in the race. The Winter Cup will be the first leg of the T.A.B. concession double. The second leg will be the Paparua Handicap. There will be an on-course treble on the Trial Hurdles, Cashmere Plate and the Sydenham Hurdles and there will be quinella betting on all races except the Trial Hurdles.
