Skateboards and paddy’s market

! A Saturday-morning paddy’s market, in the Oxford Terrace car park, and organised week-end skateboarding in the Manchester Street car park, may soon be authorised by the Christchurch City Council. Yesterday, the public utilities committee recommended approval of both plans.

Skate-boarding would be supervised by the Y.M.C.A. when the Manchester Street building is not open for parking, on Saturday mornings and Sundays. A responsible adult would have to supervise the activity. It would be allowed after gates are fitted next month at the entrance and exit. Riders would not be able to use the exit ramps, and the Y.M.C.A. would be required to arrange adequate public liability insurance. The organisation wotdd also be responsible for any damage caused, and the council would not be responsible for any injuries. Mr J. M. Russell submitted the paddy’s market proposal for the Oxford Terrace building. The proposal is similar to a market programme already being held in an Auckland car park. The council would charge a rent of $25 a ramp in the building, and Mr Russell would sub-let space to people who want to sell or exchange goods on Saturday mornings. Mr Russell would be required to have a hawker’s licence for the scheme, and the rented area would have to be left clean after its use as a market.
