Otago back shows potential

PA Dunedin The emergence of Rob Richan as a midfield back of exciting attacking potential was one of the features of Otago’s win, 22-15, against South Canterbury at Carisbrook yesterdav. The sturdy Balclutha second five-eighths, in his first match for Otago, had the distinction of scoring a try after only five minutes play. Otago set up a ruck when a South Canterbury punt from a line-out failed to find touch and Richan receiving the ball, showed immense strength and deft footwork to break clear of four or five attempted tackles on a 20m run to the line. Another time, Richen made a strong break from which the Otago forwards drove into a ruck as a unit, and the half-back Tim Burcher, worked the ball to the right for the wing, Bryce McKenzie, to score in the comer. Otago led, 15-6, at halftime. Scorers were: For Otago: Rob Richan Bevan Wilson, and Bryce McKenzie, tries; Wilson two conversions and two penalty goals. For South Canterbury: Robin Heron, a try; Doug Nicol, a conversion and three penalty goals.
