Russian giant top lifter

NZPA Montreal Vasily Alexeev of Russia, proved himself the strongest man in the world yesterday by retaining his super heavy-weight crown and setting a world record at the Olympic wight-lifting competition. Alexeev, undefeated since winning his first world title in 1970, trounced the opposition with a two-lift total ot 440 kg. The 34-year-old maintenance engineer from Arjazanj, near Moscow, set an Olympic record with 185 kg for the snatch, then retained the world mark in the jerk by lifting 255 kg. Gerd Bonk, of East Germany who took the world record from the Russian earlier this year with 252.5 kg, could only manage a combined lift of 405 for the silver medal while his teammate, Helmut Losch, took the bronze with an aggregate of 387.5 kg.
