New rugby referees
Johnny Adams, a prominent senior rugby player for Albion during the 19305. is one of four new appointments to the senior referees’ panel. The other newcomers are Messrs P. J. Brandon, D. W. Priest and J. G. Tabah. The panel, which comprises 16 referees, was tabled at a meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Union. Cautioned.—L. Stock, of the Suburbs second grade side, was cautioned after being ordered off last Saturday for misconduct. Stock, the captain of the side, questioned the awarding of a try and it was alleged that when the referee went to move away Stock placed a hand on his chest and went on talking.
Golf.—Jerry Pate’s SUS4O.OOO victory in the Canadian Open golf tournament has made him the richest rookie ever on the United States pro tour and catapulted him into the top 10 on the money-winning list. Pate, aged 22. who won the United States Open this year jumped from seventeenth to sixth place with [total earnings of $U5128.482, Ben I Crenshaw is first with $U5190.401.
