“The Year of the Child”

U.N.I.C.E.F. hopes to celebrate 1979 as the International Year of the Child. That year will be the 20th anniversary of the United Nations declaration of the Rights of the Child. The celebrations will depend to a certain extent on whether governments of member states will give financial support to the plan, says the latest U.N.I.C.E.F. bulletin. The declaration of the Rights of the Child was unanimously adopted by the U.N. Genera! Assembly in November, 1959.

U.N.I.C.E.F. has spent $3,000,000 to support Red

Cross Relief work in Angola since March of this year. The money has helped to provide the medical teams in Angola with supplies of drugs and high protein foods. This assistance is the first part of a programme of further aid for Angola. Relief supplies and cooking utensils have been sent to families displaced by the fighting in Lebanon from U.N.I.C.E.F. A total of $90,000 worth of supplies for one thousand families, including lamps, pots and pans, kerosene stoves and babies’ bottles, were dispatched to Beirut earlier this year. SI.SM relief and rehabilitation programme for the Lebanon announced by U.N.I.C.E.F.

The popular, folk-rock singer, Cat Stevens, is giving the proceeds of a recent concert in New York to U.N.I.C.E.F. for assistance in earthquake-stricken Guatemala. It is the third donation Cat Stevens has made to U.N.I.C.E.F. in the last year. The new donation will be used in the S3M U.N.I.C.E.F. programme to rebuild and re-equip community facilities and to restore basic services for children and mothers in the highland region of the country.
