Tanker hijack?

NZPA-Reuter Washington The United States has warned ships in the Persian Gulf area to be alert for possible hijack attempts, and shipping sources in Bahrain have said that the warning is being taken seriously. The warnings were broadcast on July 21 and 23. They are still in effect. They advise all shipping in the area to be “alert to any unusual or abnormal activities that could lead to a hijacking or other hostile actions.”

The broadcasts were made by the United States Defence Mapping Agency at the request of the State Department, which had received vague and unconfirmed reports from a foreign intelligence service that unidentified terrorists might attempt to hijack an oil tanker, officials said.
