(hi utage Jonathan Elsom. the London-based Christchurch actor who had a highly successful season at the Court Theatre earlier this year with his one-man Shakespeare show, is now back on the London Stage. Young wrote, “is as strong as anything in the West End at the moment.” Art prise Entries are being invited once again for the annual Redcliffe Art Contest, run by the Redcliffe Art Society in Queensland. The contest, for which entries will close on August Ik. offers a top prize of $5OO for a representational painting in oil or acrylic. Smaller prizes ($300) are offered for a non-represen-tational painting, a watercolour, and a portrait, and there is a special prize of $lOO for a painting depicting the activities of children. Like the group’s last pantomime. “Aladdin.” the new show is being produced by Peter Roberts, who says it willbe aimed at all children under 90. Ten members of the group will take part in the programme, which will feature Hindemith’s Sonatina for Two Flutes, a wind quintet by a German composer, Franz Danzi, two arias by Handel for two oboes, two horns, and bassoon, and an unusual duettino for two bassoons by Eugene Bozza. The object of the ensemble, which was formed last year, is to provide opportunities for its members to play large-scale works for wind instruments. So far this year it has given two recitals at the arts festival, a lunch-time recital in the Ngaio Marsh Theatre, and a Sunday concert at Akaroa.
