‘Unseen industry

"Although our industry consumes a lot of manpower and costs millions of dollars a year to maintain. it attracts little publicity and is often ‘unseen’ ,” says Mr G. K. Lukies, president of the New Zealand Federation of Master Cleaners.

Although the Anti Litter Council and the Environmental Council have been established by the Government in New Zealand, neither has been given the support nor the strength to carry out its duties effectively, says Mr Lukies. “While little attention is being given to the standards of public cleaning, we can only expect cleaning costs to spiral upwards. It has been proved overseas that with regular maintenance and legislated deterrents, the public can become cleaning conscious, and cleaning costs reduced. ‘‘lf cleaning costs are to be contained then the educator and the law enforcer has a mighty task ahead in a community which is inclined to disregard cleanliness and openly defy our anti-litter laws.” he said. The prime objective of the federation, he says, is to provide through its accredited members efficient and economical cleaning services that satisfy the needs of the commercial and private sectors of the community.

“The point of holding this first New Zealand conference is to provide information and discussion opportunities to enable accredited members of the federation to become more efficient and to bring to the attention of the community the need for it to become cleaning conscious.”
