Lakes 68 p.c. full

South Island hydroelectric storage lakes are full enough to meet power demand for the rest of this winter, as long as supply authorities remain within allocations set by the New Zealand Electricity Department.

The Christchurch district manager of the department (Mr G. B. Collie) said on Tuesday that the eight storage lakes as a whole were 68 per cent full. This was enough to meet the estimated power demand until the spring thaw replenished them. He said that supply authorities had their highest allocations of the year this week. Demand should start to drop next week, with increasing sunshine and warmer temperatures.

The state of the lakes at the moment is: Manapouri 39 per cent full, Te Anau 69 per cent, Hawera 48 per cent, Pukaki MO per cent (through artificial level control), Tekapo 18 per cent, Benmore 87 per cent (also artificial control), Coleridge 42 per cent and Cobb 74 per cent.
