GREYHOUNAD RACING Shady Havoc ready for S.I. championship

By

BOB SCHUMACHER

"We have been waiting over three years for her to (come into season and she picks this week to do it,” lamented Lois Henlex. who races the New Zealand champion greyhound bitch, Rise and Shine, in partnership with her husband. Peter,

The withdrawal of the brilliant bitch has robbed the South Island championship field of a readymade favourite when the title is decided at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday afternoon.

Rise and Shine was nominated for the race, but the Planet bitch was in trouble at the week-end. Speaking from Oxford yesterday. Mrs Henley said that it was first thought to be an infection, but it was later diagnosed as a seasonal complaint. “We are naturally disappointed as she was in prime condition and would have relished the soft track on Monday night when the qualifying heats were run,” she said.

The Henleys had intended to mate Rise and Shine with their stud dog. Streaky Robert, but with the New Zealand championships only four months away, that plan will be shelved. GREAT CHANCE

Rise and Shine's litter sister. Shady Havoc, must stand a fine chance of gaining her biggest success since she beat Sally Havoc in the final of the 1974 Canterbury Futurity Stakes. The black bitch is a brilliant box dog and a strong front-runner. She is the present holder of the 540 m track record — the same distance as the feature race on Saturday — and has two wins over Rise and Shine this season. In her heat, Shady Havoc made one of her rare poor jumps and was at the rear at the first bend. But she swept around the field along the back and passed all but the strong pacemaker,; Desert Fox.

Shady Havoc has drawn box No. 6 — a trap number which has met with considerable success at the park recently — and she should be in the van throughout. RECORD-HOLDER

Jock Walsh, the trainer of Shady Havoc, has two other representatives in the field, and both must rate a chance. Rex Havoc, a litter brother to Shady Havoc, is the record-holder over 340 m. He is a good beginner and has plenty of early pace. The big brindle dog won his heat, easily after putting lengths on the field from the jump. Desert Fox, by Red Baron from the former!

I South Island champion bitch,l iJetsant. struck his peak in [April when he won twice in' ) excellent times. [ He failed to flatter freshj up in the limit-open event at. 'the la>t meeting, but has im-l proved and he could be, j troublesome if he can reach [the lead. Hobbs Galore, which was iin superb form at the start [of the year, suffered a shoul(der ini.iry in the Robinson' [Rose Bowl last April and [has *ii-ice been in season.; [The Old Hobbs bitch has; [made a full recovery and ! eclipsed her heat field in the (fastest time of the four (heats — 82.895ec. She has great speed, but; [will need luck in the run-1 (ning from the outside box. I Two southern dogs, Kat-; Irina Ann and Olympic Roy-! I ale, will add interest to the; race. Katrina Ann, a recent) [Otago winner, had a hard! [run and did well to finish' [second to Hobbs Galore. I Olympic Royale managed! to edge Maxi Revs out of) i second to qualify in Rex [Havocs heat. Both dogs were having their first run) on the track and they would only need to show slight mi-; provem'ent to upset the fancied Christchurch dogs. Aft-r her fine winning run in the open race at the last; meeting, Jock Mclisterl would have been disappointed at the failure of | Maxi Revs to qualify. However, he received ■ some compensation when his , other runner. Top Club, I; triumphed in his heat. Top'. Club has been away from;’ the track for eight months | after a leg injury, and it was remarkable that his return should be marked by a win. Lady Dawn, which was runner-up to Top Club in the heats, might be struggling in such class company. The meeting has drawn first-class fields. One interesting runner in the limit 540 m is Tip Top, the 1974 South Gland champion. Fields are:— NON-EQUALISATOR (1 P.M.) ■ First maiden (540 ml —Flight* Commando. Palomino.
