Rubbish stays

About 35,000 householders and businesses in Christchurch and districts will not have their rubbish collected today and tomorrow because of a two-day strike bv council labourers. The areas affected are the northern and central parts of the city, all of rural Paparua County and a sector of the urban area, the Lyttelton shopping centre, parts of Riccarton Borough, and parts of Waimairi and Heathcote counties. The Borough of Kaiapoi, whion has its rubbish collection on Tuesdays, will not oe affected.

The council labourers belong to the Canterbury sub-branch of the Labourers' and General Workers’ Union, which called the strisce after a meeting in Christchurch on Monday The strike is in protest at the Government's wage freeze regulations. Rubbish normally collected from the rural areas of Paparua County tomorrow would now be collected on Saturday as the collection was only fortnightly, said the county engineer (Mr J. Annan) yesterday. Spokesmen for the councils advised householders whose rubbish

would normally be collected today and Fridav to refrun from leaving their rubbish bags in the street and to put them out with next week's rubbish bags. A spokesman for the Riccart m Bon,ugh Council said that householders who wished to dispose of their rubbish urgently could take it to the council’s yard in Rotherham Householders in the city or in the areas of the authorities will have to retain their rubbish bags for a week or take them to an official council rubbish t'p.
