Auckland Airport alert

PA Auckland An investigation will be held into the cause of a tyre fault which caused an emergency alert at the Auckland Airport yesterday. Air New Zealand flight TE 706 made a safe landing after authorities in Singapore told Auckland that a tyre tread had been left on the tarmac in Singapore when the plane took off. Captain D. Aarons flew the plane, which was carrying 102 passengers, low over the Auckland Airport tower. An engineer studied the undercarriage from the tower and discovered that although all eight of the wheel tyres were inflated one had'lost its tread. Some denting was caused by the tread to the wing flaps as it bounced off but it did not hinder the later landing of the plane. Workman repaired the damage to the flaps. The tyre and others in the same batch will be inspected by airport staff and the tyre manufacturers.
