Govt spending ‘extravagant’

A call for a public inquiry into the Treasury’s accounting and financial control methods has been made by the president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce (Mr A. M. Jolly). The report of the Auditor-General tabled in Parliament last week revealed that for the year ended March 31 the Government spent nearly SI76M more than the Budget allowed. “Even allowing for the impact of wages and salary increases during the year, unauthorised expenditure totals 5134 M,” said Mr Jolly yesterday. This was shockingly

extravagant public spending, he said. The level of overspending was “without precedent” in New Zealand's fiscal history and was a complete breakdown in Parliament’s control of the public purse. “It is a non-political question, but at a time when the spending by the public sector of the total domestic income is at an all-time high, this is intolerable,” said Mr Jolly. He would ask the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) to establish a commitee public inquiry with its members from outside the Public Service.
