Randy festival
Villagers in the Dorset countryside chased pretty maidens with three-foot poles on Sunday in a festive revival of the medieval custom known as Randy Day. Their reward for catching the damsel of their choice and touching her with a decorated pole, was a kiss. The Bishop of Salisbury’ gave his blessing to the revival of the custom as part of the summer festivities marking thei 900th anniversary of Salis-j bury Cathedral. There wasi no hint cf bawdiness at the I festival, although the termi “randy” has taken on aj different meaning since the I festival began. — London. I
