Pollution level high
High levels of air pollution ■were again recorded in Christchurch in the 24 hours to 9 a.m. yesterday. For the first time' in almost four years the sulphur dioxide reading at the Manchester Street sampling site was more than 400 micrograms per cubic metre. The figure was 448. Average readings for air pollution in central Christchurch. taken b*- the Health Department at the Reserve Bank building for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday, were; Smoke: 288, high.
Sulphur dioxide: 181, medium. Nitrogen oxides: 417, high. The figures for the inner suburban area for the same period were: Smoke: 346, high. Sulphur dioxide: 74, medium. Nitrogen oxides: 343, high. Readings are in micrograms per cubic metre. Levels are: Smoke: less than 40, low; more than 120, high. Sulphur dioxide: less than 60, low; more than 200, high. Nitrogen oxides; less than 100. Jow; more than 250, high.
