The first of two container ships to service the New Zealand-Japan trade has been launched in Japan and will hand over to her owners on October 26. The 33,500-ton vessel will be named Godwit. She is owned jointly by the Japan Line and the Mitsui O.S.K. Line, two of the four member lines in the New Zealand Eastern Shipping Committee, i The Godwit will begin loading immediately she is handed over, and is' expected
to arrive in New Zealand in November. A second container vessel (is expected to join the service in December. To be called Aotea. she is being built for the remaining partners in the committee, the Crusader Line and the China i Navigation Company, which (will trade under the common service name of Crusader Swire Container Service. The vessels have a service speed of 21 knots, enabling them to complete a round voyage in 40 days.
It is still not known whether they will be seen in Lyttelton. The committee remains intent on servicing only three New Zealand container ports: Auckland. Wellington, and iPort Chalmers.
