Loch Linnhe at evens
NZPA Melbourne The champion New Zealand jumper Loch Linnhe, has finned to even-money favourite for the Grand National Steeplechase at Flemington on Saturday. His form is excellent following an impressive win over the jumps last Saturday in which he made short work of most of his National opponents, over a distance that really did not suit him. On Saturday he dropped 25kg to 71kg for the Grand National and on form looks as if he could run all day. Loch Linnhe’s major rival will be another New Zealand horse, Tossa, which won the event last year, and is attempting to become the first horse to win two National steeples in a row since Sii Cameron in 1963 and 1964. Tossa carried 67kg in running third to Loch Linnhe on Saturday, but he drops tc 65kg for the National. Aircon, another New Zealand horse is second favourite for the steeple, and in his last appearance, he jumped brilliantly to win over 360 C metres at Moonee Valley. However, doubt hangs over Aircon’s chances follow ing his disastrous effort in last year's National.
