Two table tennis titles for Miss Morris

PA Wellington Although she failed to justify her top seeding in the singles, Jan Morris, the Canterbury champion, won the women’s doubles and mixed doubles at the North Island table tennis championships at Carterton on Saturday.

Miss Morris teamed with Angela Brackenridge in the women’s event to beat Neti Traill and Ann Stonestreet (Auckland) in the final. She partnered Gary Murphy (Hutt Valley) to win the mixed doubles.

James Morris (Northland) won the men’s singles. In the final, he beat Garry Murphy (Hutt Valley) 21-16, 2119, 21-18.

The women’s singles was won by Anne Stonestreet who beat Neti Traill 21-17, 21-12, 21-15 in a surprisingly quick final in which Miss Stonestreet attacked at every opportunity from both the forehand and backhand side.

Both these players had struggled to reach the final, with Miss Stonestreet being pushed to four sets by Mrs Ruth Conway (Hutt Valley) and Mrs Traill only narrowly beating Angela Brackenridge (Auckland).

The men’s doubles was won by Graham Lassen and Alan Tomlinson, who beat Don Couper and Robert Blair (all from Auckland) 2115, 14-12, 21-16, 21-18 in the final.
