TV staff assured of jobs

PA Wellington The Minister of Broadcasting (Mr Templeton) assured representatives of the Public Service Association yesterday that no redundancies would result from the proposed restructuring of the two television corporations. At a press conference after a two-hour meeting with the representatives, Mr Templeton said he had indicated it was his clear intention that any surplus staff would be employed elsewhere in the broadcasting system or retrained to do other jobs. He hoped the new New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation would be working next year: legislation to set it up should be introduced into Parliament in August, depending on other legislation and the budget. Mr Templeton said the P.S.A. had also been concerned about the political independence of the new corporation. He had told the representatives that provisions protecting the independence of broadcasting would be included in the legislation, and these would be discussed with the interested parties. The president of the P.S.A. (Mr J. F. Turner) said the representatives were "reasonably satisfied" with the talks.
