Seaward defences
Responsibility for Lyttelton’s coastal defences seems to have been put in the lap of the Lyttelton Harbour Board if a clause in the board’s Godiey Head lease is taken literally. On July 1 the Godiey Head lighthouse and fog signal were handed over by the Department of Lands and Survey to the Harbour Board, and with them the lease of 34 hectares of land lin the vicinity. According to one of the terms of the lease the board has responsibility for the, I “maintenance of gun emiplacements and allied military -works oh' the leased area.” The board has taken this; to mean simply' that it has i the responsibility of protecting the installations from, vandals, but just the same it! is taking a rather dim view of the matter.
