Nuclear ships
Sir, —What is the matter with these people who are so worried about nuclear ships coming to our New Zealand ports? Why don’t they listen to those who have knowledge of the subject? One authority, who spent several years at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell, says: “Re nuclear-powered ships coming to New Zealand ports, why worry if you don’t remove cars from roads? There is far greater personal risks from cars, and leaving a ship 10 or 100 miles off the coast does nothing for the safety or otherwise of future generations. Public reactions to ‘nuclear’ are quite irrational”. — Yours etc., M. D. HAY. June 17, 1976.
