Tall order for team

A giant centre, Richard Stubbs, is certain to commend a lot of attention when the touring Canterbury - Bankstown (Sydney) men’s basketball team meets Canterbury at Cowles Stadium on Saturday evening. Stubbs, a 25-year-old navy systems technician, stands

6ft lOin and weighs 16st 61b. His height has helped him to become the. top points-scorer in Sydney over the last three seasons. He is reputed to be an excellent shooter and rebounder and therefore a domi-. nant player at both ends of the court. Certainly, he will be a tough opponent for the 6ft Bin John Bosch and Mike Seaward to mark. Other big men in the Syd-

ney side, the top team from New South Wales. are centre, Peter Lopez (6ft Bin and lost 71b), noted for his mobility and strong rebounding; and two 6ft sin forwards — David Payne, a very good outside shooter, and Darrel] Corcoran, one of the four 21-year-olds in the team and a very good offensive player noted for his passing abilities. The player-coach of the 10-man team is a 6ft guard, Geoffrey Todd, .who is such an inspired leader on the court that he was named the “most valuable player” in Sydney last year. Canterbury’s selectorcoach (Mr Brian Cottell) yesterday named a reasonably strong team to play the Australians. It is: Bob Manthei (captain), Stuart Ferguson. Tom Neumann. John Bosch, John Fairweather, Robert Cooke, Paul Daigneauit, Ed Manco, Tim Guthrie and Mike Seaward. Two players, Roger Millard and Dennis Barry, were not considered because of injury. Millard has still not recovered from recent foot operations and Barry has been having problems with his ankle. Seaward will be making his debut for Canterbury at the senior level and if performances this season are any indication he should give a good showing. Paul Daigneauit is making a return after a season out of the representative side.
