Two-year wait

Homeowners might have to wait two years to install approved heaters under the proposed legislation to make Christchurch a clean-air zone. A major Christchurch supplier of one of the best known approved models, the Juno, has a waiting list of 18 months to two years. A spokesman for the firm said yesterday that the 200 outstanding orders for Juno

heaters included some placed in June, 1974. The heaters are made in Oamaru, and sent to Christchurch in small consignments of three or four. “The supply just cannot keep pace with demand,” the spokesman said. Prices for approved heaters range from $540 for a wet-back Juno to $1250 for the coke-fired Heatamatic. The imported Rayburn Prince retails at $595, and the Marquis costs between $6OO and $750. All except the Juno are readily available. but installation costs can vary widely, according to retailers. Some householders could find themselves paying $3OO to have a $5OO unit installed, but installation normally ranged between $l5O and $2OO, a spokesman said.
