This imported tree-felling machine is being assessed by scientists at the Forest Research Institute at Rotorua and by the new Logging Industry Research Association. The machine shears trees from their stumps and swings them into position for a chain flail that removes the branches. It can shear and hold up to three slender trees, or cut softwoods up to 24 inches diameter at the base. The tests are being made for Carter Oji Kokasaku Pan Pacific, Ltd, which plans to use the machinery on Pinus ponderosa in the Kaingaroa State Forest, where many of the trees are small and require considerable trimming.
