Trout fry virus
Sir, — The article “Virus Devastates Trout Fry’’ by Brian Clark in “The Press” last Saturday presents a frightening picture. Can I ask the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries either to dispel or confirm the fears that this story will generate amongst anglers. — Yours, D. J. HUGHEY. April 20, 1976. [Mr R. W. Little, senior freshwater fisheries officer, Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, replies: “The article paints a picture of devastation that does not apply here nor does it apply in Britain as stated. We have no suggestion or information whatsoever that any trout .or salmon virus exist in this country'. If any did occur, we should know soon of the occurrence and isolate the area and destroy all suspected stocks. To ensure against any introduction of disease we now prevent the introduction of any salmon or trout eggs or adults, or product of salmon or trout except cooked salmon in the can.’]
