New Tasman fleet?
The Union Steam Ship Company is remaining fairly non-com-initial about the possible effects the introduction of Tasman Pulp and Paper Company ships on the Tasman run may have on shipping services in New Zealand.
The Union Company has had a virtual monopoly of Tasman shipping, but last week Tasman Pulp and Paper announced it would go into the shipping business. Tasman is primarily interested in two specialised vessels for the carriage of a proportion of the company’s cargo from Tauranga to Australian markets.
In February, overseas shippmg sources indicated that Tasman had approached London financiers about loans for two 7000-tonne, side-loading ships, to be built in Bergen, Norway, as newsprint and forest products carriers.
There have also been rumblings from a third quarter — that of Brierley Investments, Ltd, which recently took over the Northern Steamship Company, and is believed to be intent on moving into Tasman shipping and the New Zealand and Australian waterfront service industries.
