ADDINGTON MARKET Prime lambs firm, cattle decline

Prime lambs and prime sheep continued to sell steadily at the Addington market yesterday, but the prime cattle sale, after opening well, tapered off badly.

Prime cattle values held up until local retail buyers had filled their needs. But because of the pressure for space at the various meat works, export buyers were unable to give their customary support, and buying power fell to very weak levels. One of the few rises of the day was seen in the prime sheep section where, following the very small yarding, the market for ewes made a marked improvement. Prime lambs Prime lamb values held up to last week’s rates, probably because of a marked fall in the size of the yarding. Entries numbered 1120 compared with 1850 last week, and a large proportion comprised shorn lambs. A minor feature of the sale was the good inquiry for lightweight lambs, and these often sold at a useful margin over those in a slightly heavier category. Values were:— Extra-heavy lambs, to $14.60. Prime heavy $12.40 to $12.80. Light to medium, $10.50 to Best summer-shorn, to $l3. Best late-shorn, to $l2. Other late-shorn, $lO to $ll. Leading sales Of prime lambs Included:— M. J. Prime sheep The prime sheep yarding of 640 head was one of the smallest saxes of the year. Adult ewes made up most of the entry, and they sold well at values up to a dollar a head above last week’s rates. A number of the best pens bettered $7. The small selection of young wethers and two-tooth ewes also sold well, and at values fully firm on the good rates of the last two sales. Values were:— Best young wethers, to $13.60. Medium wethers. $l2 to $l3. Adult wethers, $5.20 to $6.50. Two-tooth ewes, $ll to $13.50. Best adult ewes, to $7.20. Medium ewes, $5.50 to $6.30. Other ewes, $4.50 to $5.20. Parsens (Springbank), 12 twotooths at $ll to $11.60. Prime cattle The prime cattle sale opened quite well, but in spite of a small entry — 406 head — it fell away badly toward the finish. The yarding again comprised mainly light to medium-weight steers. During the first half of selling, most cattle were up to last week’s rates, with demand being a little better. But as selling progressed, demand weakened, and many steers eased as much

ras $lO a head. Heifers and cows ; also weakened, although by a t smaller amount. It was the poor- - est closing to an Addington ; market for many a day. Selling i was confined to local retail buy- • ers. 0 Steer beef, at the best of the - market, sold at 522 to $24 per • 1001 b (48.5 c to 53c a kg), with t some sales of good quality light* 1 weights to $26 (57.5 c a kg); heifer o beef at $l9 to $2O (42c to 44c a !' kg), and cow beef at $l6 to $lB j* (35.5 c to 39.5 c a kg). 0 Values were:— Extra-heavy steers, to $2OO. Dairy cattle Some reasonably good prices were paid in the dairy cattle section, but this served to emphasise that there remains a useful demand for top quality heifers; anything in a lesser category has a much more limited market. A Friesian heifer with calf at foot, fetched the top price of 5172.50, and another was sold at $154. The best of those still to calve realised $159. However, the average run of heifer continued to sell at $7O to $ll5. A cow. due to her third calf, fetched $ll4, and a young cow, due to her second calf, $lO2. Vealers An entry of about 120 vealers had a fair sale, with good quality entries making a small improvement on recent rates. The

yarding included a useful selection of heavier young cattle, and the best of them sold to $9l. Good average vealers sold at $6B to $74, and medium at $57 to $65, large, well-finished calves sold to $5O. Based on dressed weight, good veal was fetching about $l9 per 1001 b. Fat pigs Fat pig values remained much in line with last week’s rates. Quality was rather mixed, although there were some good consignments of porkers and baconers. Choppers met an average, rather than a strong sale. Values were:— Light porkers, to $45. Medium porkers, $45.50 to $49. Heavy porkers and light baconers, $49.75 to $56.50. Extra-heavy pigs, to $73. Large choppers, to $7O. Store pigs Store pigs met a rather erratic sale. Demand came mainly from local fatteners, and the larger pigs drew the best inquiry at rates fully firm on those of last week. Sales of breeding stock included two advertised Welsh boars at $9O to $92. Values were:—Small weaners. to $lB. Good weaners, $18.50 to $22. Slips and small stores, $23 to $3O. Large stores, to $37.50. Unfinished porkers, to $42.
