Biair Stockwell must be one of the unluckiest athletes to miss Olympic Games selection, not just on the score of ability but on precedent. In the previous 14 Olympic or Commonwealth Games staged since World War n. road cyclists have been sent to 11 of them. And as befitting the importance of a national championship. the titleholder has been a Games representative on 10 occaThe only exception was for the 1964 Olympic Games when Tony Ineson, then national champion, did not win selection in the five-man road team.
Like Stockwell, Ineson is from the South Island — Southland — and the only national champion not from the North Island to win Games selection was Tino Tabak, to Kingston irt 1966.
