Armed boy finds escaper under bed

Press Association) i HAMILTON April 20. i A 12-year-old boy; armed with a knife found an escaped prisoner under his bed in a Hamilton house early this afternoon, ending a police search involving dogs and the armed offenders squad. Peter Sutcliffe and his mother, Mrs Betty Sutcliffe, decided to make a second
check after policemen had been through their Union Street house searching for the 17-year-old youth. The hunt began last night after a Hamilton police sergeant had been slashed in i the face with a broken bottle. About 11.15 a.m, the police received information that the youth was in a Claudelands house. He was i believed to be armed, and the police cordoned off the area. The armed offenders squad was called out, and houses Sin Union Street were searched. Mrs Sutcliffe said later that a policeman had asked her if she had seen the youth, and then had searched her house. .No-one had been found. “I got Peter and went on to the front lawn. I asked him, ‘Where would you go to hide?’ “Peter said, ‘Under a bed,’ so we went back through the house. Peter went into his room and got his knife, and we then looked under the bed 1 pulled up the bedspread. and Peter yelled.! ‘There he is’. “We ran out of the room and slammed the door.’’
The youth jumped out of a window, and was arrested by armed policemen.
