CHINESE STOP MIGRATION

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 20. The Government will seek clarification of a Chinese Government decision to halt the proposed migration to New Zealand of 50 Chinese market gardeners. The Acting Prime Minister (Mr Taiboys) said today that the Chinese decision represented "a totally new concept” to the New Zealand Government. The decision — which said that emigration was allowed only for the reunification of close relations —- seemed "a little bit

out of context -with what I understand to be the situation with Chinese emigrants to Hong Kong,” Mr Taiboys said. He did not know why the decision had been made now, rather than when it was first proposed last year. Recruitment of up to 50 single male Chinese was agreed to by the Labour Government in 1974 after representations from the Chinese Commercial Growers’ Federation. The National Government t opposed it but recognised ■ that a commitment had been made and must be honoured. Mr Taiboys said he would seek clarification of the decis sion, rather than make representations to have it re- : I versed.
