Joginder wins tragic rally
(N Z. Press Assn —Copyright) NAIROBI. In spite of two major tragedies, including the deaths of his Japanese mechanic and a spectator whom he hit at 100 m.p.h., Joginder Singh of Kenya yesterday easily won the tough twentyfourth Safari car rally, United Press International reported. Only a quarter of the original starters finished the fiveday, 3100-mile (about 5000 km) African Safari which was plagued by possibly the angriest protest in its history from eliminated drivers, freak weather conditions, and accidents which dashed the major European challenge. With the victory, Joginder became the first" driver to win the Safari three times. He was followed home by Robin: Ulyate of Tanzania and Scotland’s Andrew Cowan. All three top finishers drove Japanese-built Colt Lancers, which swept the manufacturers prize. Joginder’s victory was marred by two tragedies — he hit and killed a spectator who dashed across the Safari route on Monday, and his Japanese chief mechanic was killed and a second mechanic badly injured in a separate accident on the same day.
