Chathams population
The Chatham Islands and Cheviot County have both ' declined in population, the I preliminary’ results of the ' 1976 Census show. The Chatham Islands' population has dropped 13.8 per* cent on the 1971 figure of 716,! bringing the present popula-l tion to 617. I, A population decrease of! 8.6 per cent has been;, recorded in Cheviot County, bringing the population to 1389. A big population increase in the Te Anau township reflected Te Anau’s develop-! ments in tourism, said the Government Statistician (Mr! E. A. Harris). Te Anau’s , population has increased 45 | per cent on its 1971 total of'i 1642. The increase of 739 hasi, bought its population up to J 2381. Il The population of Buller'. County has increased 251, j and Westport Borough has;; had an increase of 20. The L Lyttelton Borough was also;i up 0.5 per cent on 1971, j bringing the total population! to 3296. I
